Pentagon Turns Guantanamo Prisoners into Tourists
Pentagon Turns Guantanamo Prisoners into Tourists AIN25 de Septiembre de 2006By Angel Rodriguez Alvarez
After reading a report by ANSA News Agency signed by Cristiano del Riccio, on the situation of the prisoners detained at the illegal US Naval Base in Guantanamo nobody can doubt that in an Olympics of cynicism and lies, Washington would walk away with all the Gold medals.
The note comments that a Pentagon report which says that many of the so called "enemy combatants" maintained in the concentration camp for years in a legal limbo and submitted to cruel interrogations, are happy there and do not wish to abandon the prison.
It is not a joke, the report says it textually and it's the forced conclusion of the asseverations contained in the document. Let us quote: "Some of the terrorist suspects detained in the US Naval Base in Guantanamo, Cuba, could have abandoned the prison already, but have not done so because they prefer to continue enjoying the excellent food, slippers and free medical assistance."
The Pentagon goes on by saying how, despite the fact that among the prisoners there are even militants that are considered to be personal body guards of Osama bin Laden, it spends more money in preparing the food for the prisoners than those that guard them. "There are dishes that add up to 4,000 calories each day".
And in their attempt to make fun of the reader's intelligence, the report goes on by saying that as a consequence of the exquisite quality and amount of food; some prisoners have gained up to 10 kilograms in weight.
The pleasant panorama presented by the Pentagon includes ophthalmologic and dental treatment. Among other privileges only found in a five star hotel, the prisoners allegedly mentions the careful attention offered to their spiritual needs which includes the availability of texts of the Koran and are even warned through sirens of the five moments of the day dedicated to pray.
The treatment, according to the report, is so refined that they have had to take into consideration the most minimum details to the point that they "have placed signs indicating the geographic location of the Mecca".
For those ungrateful prisoners - there is no other way to call them - that despite all this, are abandoning the installation, "they are given a package as a gift with a copy of the Koran, pants and jean jacket, a white shirt, shaving material, a blanket and a pillow for their long trip back home".
Evidently the Pentagon believes in the bad memory of international public opinion, which for months was informed of the denunciations of the US authorities' denial of legal and humanitarian assistance for the detainees and whose names are still unknown.
This is the only way to explain the publication of the report to the world, which is horrified at listening or having to read the testimonies of the victims who have narrated the tortures and humiliations to which they were submitted during the interrogations.
There is also the other story which was revealed by the press where the sacred Koran was stepped on by the guards and placed in the bathrooms to be used as toilet paper.
The Pentagon also forgets that the world was notified about the prolonged hunger strikes, the suicides and the dozens of attempts which the prisoners used as a last resort to escape from such punishment.
But this is not just about old stories. Last Thursday, ANSA news agency in Washington DC, reported that 37 year old "Saudi Shaker Aamer, has been detained for a year in an isolation cell in the US military jail in Guantanamo with his mental health seriously deteriorated as a consequence of the solitude and mistreatment", said his lawyers.
"His state is such that the man," according to the denunciation, "is convinced that he talks to the ants and they respond".
"According to his lawyers", adds ANSA, "the guards have carried out physical and psychological torture and beaten him, on various occasions almost strangling him".
Will the Pentagon's next report affirm that everything said about what has happened in the illegal US Naval Base in Guantanamo was propaganda by the enemies of the White House?
The issue of the almost five hundred prisoners in Guantanmo is too tragic and revealing of the fascist methods used by the current US administration to consider the report what it really deserves to be: a script for a good comedy.
This is valuable alchemy by the Pentagon, being able to turn the mistreated "combatant enemies", into five star tourists.
WILL THE GREATEST PUERTO ..
WILL THE GREATEST PUERTO RICAN BOXER PLEASE STAND UP!
Tito! Tito! Tito! That’s been the chant of Puerto Ricans for over a decade. It’s been many years since the little island produced a superstar that could capture the hearts of the people. It was his explosive one-dimensional style that packed them into The Garden, the MGM Grand, wherever, cause everyone loves a knockout. Having a knack for coming back from sudden death, and doing via KO 85% of the time, Trinidad’s hold-on-to-the-edge-of-your-seat” style was the very definition of fan-friendly.
.
In ranking the best P4P P.R. boxers, one must apply a different formula than when ranking P4P all time greats. A Puerto Rican candidate is representing a people, a nation (OK, a commonwealth). Often, these fighters are declared “The Pride of Puerto Rico.” To a certain degree, the lore surrounding a given boxer goes beyond boxing. All of our champions have proudly represented, but for many of our fighters their actions outside the ring have diminished their overall accomplishments.
Arguably the greatest Puerto Rican fighter was Wilfredo Gomez. Although known more for his punching power, Gomez could box. He had an excellent amateur background with 90 victories in 93 fights, but Gomez attributed his three titles in three weight divisions to his punching power. He KO’d 88% of his opponents and scored 33 consecutive stoppages at one point; his nickname, “The Bazooka,” got it right.
It would take a risky jump to featherweight, where he faced Salvador Sanchez—perhaps the greatest Mexican fighter ever—to finally derail this punching machine. This first loss was only a temporary setback.
Gomez continued to campaign at featherweight and three years later he was on top of the world again, capturing his second world title in defeating countryman Juan Laporte. At this point, Gomez was at the end of his career. He lost his belts in his first defense when Azumah Nelson came knocking—a boxer that wasn’t just the best fighter his country (Ghana) ever produced, but the entire continent of Africa. Gomez moved up in weight again and got a hometown decision against Rocky Lockridge, capturing the junior lightweight title. That victory was short-lived, as he lost it in his first defense.
Gomez ended his career with a record of 44 wins, 3 loses, 1 draw, with 42 KOs. If his life ended there it would be very impressive, worthy of the #1 spot as the greatest. But just like he let his people down in the ring against Sanchez (his own words, mind you), many feel he let Puerto Rico down again outside the ring. In 1994, he was arrested on charges of domestic violence (beating his wife) and cocaine possession. Although that’s his personal life and perhaps should be kept separate from his professional accomplishments, we Puerto Ricans look at the whole person. (Tito isn’t just beloved for how he fought, but how he represented us in general.)
Sadly, alcohol and drugs have led to the downfall of many great fighters. Alexis Arguello, Pernell Whitaker, Sugar Ray Leonard, and many others, have all struggled to surmount their troubles. But we should aim to forgive those who struggle with a disease and support those who can be helped, which brings us to another P4Per undoubtedly near the top of anyone’s list: Wilfred Benitez.
Benitez is probably the most talented Puerto Rican boxer of all time. He was a defensive wizard, and if you were off your game 1% you had no chance of beating him. He would make fighters look foolish, presenting them a target that was actually an illusion. Benitez probably wished he had a mirror in the ring so he could gaze at himself and admire his handiwork. But talent alone can only take you so far; a lack of discipline was his undoing.
But who can forget about Carlos Ortiz!? This legendary lightweight champion enjoyed success in and out of the ring. According to “Boxing Heroes and Champions” by Bob Mee, Ortiz owned a home, a Cadillac, had stocks, life insurance, and trust funds for his children—all before even becoming a world champion. Born in Mayaguez, his parents moved to NY when he was a child. He turned pro at 18 and retired with a record of 61 wins, 7 loses, 1 draw, and a no contest. Ortiz had wins over fighters like Laguna, Joe Brown, Gabriel Elorde, and Sugar Ramos. He’s also the first Puerto Rican to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. His only career setback is losing two out of three fights against top-10 jr. welterweight champ Duilio Loi.
The pressures of boxing and success did get to Ortiz to a small degree. He developed a drinking problem and admitted to entering the ring DRUNK! But it’s not how you start the race, as they say. Today Ortiz is a strong man who kicked the sauce and tobacco, in spite of owning a nightclub and liquor store when he retired. He also owned apartment buildings in NY and some small companies in Puerto Rico. He is unquestionably a P4P great—not just on this Puerto Rican list but for all time.
The first man to bring the honor of “world champion” to P.R. is Sixto Escobar. Sixto was legendary for his determination and toughness in the ring. Unlike Felix Trinidad, Sixto was never knocked out or even taken off his feet. Unfortunately, information about Sixto’s record is unclear. His documented record is 42 wins against 21 loses, but it’s said the figures should be higher in both categories. Regardless, when talking P4P, I don’t think anybody who lost 30% of his fights should be seriously considered elite—as unfair as that may seem.
Now let’s go back and take a hard look at our man “Tito” Trinidad.
He had a short but solid amateur career, going 51-6 loses with only 12 knockouts. As an amateur he never displayed the punching power that made him famous as a pro. Trinidad the prizefighter cut burrowed through welterweights, taking on all comes. His chin raised question marks throughout his career, as he was dropped by several average fighters. I shutter to think what would’ve happened had he faced his predecessor, “the Motor City Cobra” Thomas Hearns. Then again, you don’t count Tito out: His fights began once he touched the canvas, a mere wake-up call to get going.
Trinidad made 15 successful defenses of his welterweight title, but spent some of his best years in undercard-obscurity, fighting nondescript opponents. He beat a washed-up Pernell Whitaker, got a gift decision against Oscar de la Hoya, and destroyed David Reid, Fernando Vargas and William Joppy, becoming the first Puerto Rican middleweight titlist with this last victory. But he didn’t escape tarnishing his stellar reputation.
Trinidad’s was busted for having an affair, putting his marriage was on the rocks. It almost ruined him, and, frankly, should have nothing to do with this discussion—but these days the price of greatness extends to life beyond the ring. And that was part of Tito’s appeal; he was a champion we could be completely proud of. Subsequently, he donated his time to charities, supporting the people of Vieques, and even serving food to the rescue workers during 9/11. It didn’t take long for him to get back in the good graces of his countrymen.
He’s never made excuses for losing, and always gave his best. Now that he’s retired, Tito has money in the bank, good health, his life seemingly intact. He essentially made all of the right moves inside and outside the ring—though maybe he should’ve ducked Winky in retrospect. (Few saw that one coming.) It’s hard to argue with choosing Tito as Numero Uno. What Tito lacked in boxing skills, he made up for in will and power.
Had all these boxers fought in the same weight division, I believe Wilfred “El Radar” Benitez had the skills, reflexes, and talent to come out on top. Gomez would’ve been a showstopper what with his punching power, and we all know what Tito did for boxing. These great giants of boxing will always hold a special place in the hearts and minds of the Puerto Rican fans. I still vacillate regarding who’s the best, but in terms of the total package, I’m going with Tito.
G.M.'s Joint Venture Partner in China Details Plan
G.M.'s Joint Venture Partner in China Details Plans to Produce Own Cars
The Chinese joint venture partner of General Motors and Volkswagen announced details today of plans to sell its own cars in China later this year and export cars to Europe next year.
The plans highlight how Chinese companies, no longer satisfied with using cheap labor to manufacture car designs from the United States, Germany and Japan, are determined to become international competitors in their own right, and are relying on Western technology transfers to do so.
Thanks to 50-50 joint ventures with G.M. and Volkswagen, the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation is China's second-largest automaker. But the company announced on today that it had set up a wholly owned subsidiary, the S.A.I.C. Motor Corporation Ltd., that will not have a foreign partner and will invest $1.25 billion in building new research and development centers, a car assembly plant and an engine factory.
S.A.I.C. Motor is staffed by what the company described in a statement as "industrial elites" who learned the business working in joint ventures with G.M. and Volkswagen executives. Wang Xiaoqiu, who worked for the Shanghai Volkswagen joint venture for 14 years and was in charge of quality supervision there, has become the general manager of S.A.I.C. Motor.
At a press conference today in Shanghai, Mr. Wang used a Chinese saying to underline the desire of Chinese auto executives to control their own destiny by striking out on their own, instead of trying to gain greater influence within joint ventures in which foreign automakers often make key decisions.
"A housekeeper can never replace a master," he said.
Multinationals like G.M., Volkswagen, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Toyota have traditionally tried to sell older models in developing countries, shipping aging equipment from factories in their home markets that were being retooled for newer designs. But fierce competition in the Chinese market and pressure from the Chinese government have forced the multinationals to transfer their latest designs to China, introducing the same models within several months of their introductions in industrialized countries.
S.A.I.C. made clear in a statement how much China has gained from the multinationals.
"With their manufacturing plants relocated to China, the technical and R&D properties are also being transferred to China," the company said. "The trend has furnished China with conditions and opportunities to independently develop its own international brands."
S.A.I.C. Motor said that its "short-term plan" called for it to have 1,000 engineers and technicians involved in research and development, along with a capacity of 170,000 engines and 120,000 family vehicles. The medium-term plan is to have 4,000 engineers and technicians and, by 2010, to have a capacity of 400,000 engines and 300,000 vehicles — equal to a tenth of China's fast-growing vehicle market now but probably a smaller share by then.
Mr. Wang said that the company intended to market 30 models derived from five basic structural designs, selling from $8,125 to $37,500.
Volkswagen entered the Chinese market in 1985 in partnership with S.A.I.C., and was dismayed a decade later when the Chinese government assigned G.M. the same partner for its entry into the Chinese market. Multinationals have long tried to avoid sharing the same joint venture partner in an overseas market, for fear of losing trade secrets.
But they have had little choice in China because of a limited number of large Chinese automakers available as partners, and because of the Chinese government's requirement that foreign automakers not take more than a 50 percent stake in any assembly operation. First Automotive Works Corporation is China's largest automaker, mainly through joint ventures with Volkswagen and Toyota; F.A.W. also makes its own line of Red Flag cars.
Volkswagen said in a statement today that it understood and supported S.A.I.C.'s desire to produce its own cars. G.M.'s longstanding position is that China's auto market is growing fast enough to accommodate more manufacturers but that both G.M. and S.A.I.C. value their joint venture; G.M. declined today to elaborate on its position.
S.A.I.C. made its independent ambitions known a year ago, when it bought the rights to the designs of two Rover cars from MG Rover Group, a bankrupt British automaker subsequently purchased by a separate Chinese manufacturer, Nanjing Automobile. S.A.I.C. plans to start production with one of those models, the Rover 75, but said today that it was also designing a wider range of models, including those with gasoline-electric hybrid engines.

Diving Prince releases autobiography
Diving Prince releases autobiography
BEIJING, March 17 -- Diving Prince Tian Liang has released an autobiography recalling his brilliant career, highlighted by winning two Olympic gold medals in four years.
Hundreds of media reporters have flocked to get a glimpse of the legendary diver at a press conference held Thursday afternoon in Beijing.
Based on his diary, Tian‘s autobiography is a personal record of his hard work throughout his career. It also contains a large number of beautiful pictures specially chosen to portray Tian Liang‘s fashionable style.
It also, for the first time, discloses details about Tian‘s love life.
27-year-old Tian Liang is famous for being a leading force in the star-studded Chinese diving team. He is known for his explosive strength and vigorous movements as well as his agility in execution on the 10-meter platform.
Tian set a new world record while competing to win Sydney Olympic gold medal in the men‘s 10-meter platform event. He scored 101.52 points during one attempt in the finals, moving on to beat arch rival Dimitry Sautin of Russia to win the gold medal.
Tian‘s world record is the highest score ever recorded for one diver in the history of Olympic diving competition.
He failed to defend his 10-meter platform title in Athens, however, instead winning a gold medal in synchronized competition.
His bright sunny smile has made him an adorable sweetheart in media and entertainment circles, but continual involvement in social and commercial activities has cost him a place on the national team, as he was demoted back to his provincial team in 2005.
Syria criticizes US asset freeze
Syria criticizes US asset freeze
Syria criticized on Thursday the U.S. move to freeze the assets of its military intelligence chief Assef Shawkat as biased to protect Israeli interests.
The United States on Wednesday blocked the U.S. assets of Shawkat, also a brother-in-law of President Bashar al-Assad, accusing him of supporting terrorism against Israel and backing Syria's interference into Lebanon.
"This shows the bias of the current U.S. administration in protecting Israel's aggressive policies ... and denial of the Palestinian legitimate right to resist Israeli terrorism," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Xinhua.
"The policies supported by the US administration do not serve security and stability in our region. But they would increase their rejection by the Arab people," it said.
Shawkat was allegedly involved in the assassination of Lebanese ex-premier Rafik Hariri in a massive truck bombing last February and his name appeared in the first report by former chief U.N. investigator Detlev Mehlis as a suspect.
Damascus has consistently denied any role in the murder and President Assad has asserted several times that any Syrian confirmed in the crime would be treated as a traitor.
